Citing sources in posts

There are a couple of options and some good practices when citing references and other sources in online articles.  The golden rule is to include a hyperlink to the original source wherever possible.

1.  In-line citations.  Sometimes the clearest way of referencing and linking to a source is to explicitly mention it in the text, and add in the appropriate hyperlink.  e.g.

On Monday, the National Institute for Occupational Safety released new data on the potential role multi-walled carbon nanotubes play as a cancer-promoter – a substance that promotes the development of cancer in the presence of a carcinogen.

2.  Include an explicit linked reference in the text.  This can often help the reader know whether they want to follow the link:

3.  Use inline citation numbers.  These are less helpful to the reader, but help the text flow more easily.  If using this format, the in-text citation should be linked to the original source, as well as the full citation:
